The Story Behind Presidential Candidate Ben Carson

Ben-CarsonBen Carson is a retired neurosurgeon running for the Republican nomination in the 2016 election. Author, Surgeon, and Philanthropist, Ben Carson, separates himself from other candidates because although he experienced struggle and hardship early in his life, he worked his way up to being a renowned neurosurgeon and having extensive political and economic knowledge.  B. Carson was born in a poor family in Detroit, Michigan, and although his mother was an under-educated woman, she always pushed her sons into following their studies and believing in themselves. Doctor Carson, went from being a poor student in school to become a director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital by the time he was only 33 years old. He truly demonstrated the value of the American dream, starting from the bottom and working your way up through society.

Beside his difficult childhood with bad grades and anger issues, Ben Carson became a prestigious doctor in the following years. Carson graduated with honors from Southwestern and earned a full scholarship to Yale, receiving a B.A. degree in psychology in 1973. Later on, Carson attended the School of Medicine at the University of Michigan to become a neurosurgeon. One of his most popular performed surgeries as a director of pediatric neurosurgery  was the separation of occipital craniopagus twins in Germana47bbe25-a148-40fc-91ac-8ce3627d98a2y, which eventually earned him an international reputation. After several successful surgeries of separating conjoined twins in different countries, Ben Carson began traveling across the country telling his story and sharing his philosophy of life.

After years of successful surgeries, a busy schedule, and a number of honorary doctorate degrees, Carson decided to step away from his career and settle down a little. Following his recovery to prostate cancer, Ben Carson wrote several books over his own life, success, philosophy and religious faith. In 2012, he decided to retire from his career as a surgeon and focus more on politics.

He is not widely regarded as an electable candidate, as he has a relatively narrow appeal. Analysts do not expect Carson to succeed among the libertarian demographic for the GOP, as his appeal is widely restricted to evangelical conservatives. However, as an experienced and renowned doctor, he would be better suited as a Surgeon General rather than as a President, given he has no experience in politics. Former members of Ben Carson’s campaign have said he cannot gather “one intelligible word” about the current situation in the Middle East, and his foreign policy advisor has since left his campaign due to a growing frustration with Carson (Read more). Although a very religious affiliated man, he has taken a strong stand against the politically correct movement. As for example when it comes to waterboarding terrorists, Ben Carson’s is completely in favor of it because he says, “there’s no such thing as political correctness when you’re fighting an enemy”.

From his bad grades at school and anger management issues as a kid to his world-class neurosurgeon skills, Ben Carson has demonstrated throughout his career that he’s capable of doing all sorts of things. With his successful and very complex surgeries, I’d say he is very capable of making crucial decisions on the spot, and that he would make a great Surgeon General for the United States. Ben Carson has been an interesting candidate to follow during the 2016 presidential elections, we’ll have to wait and see what more is in store for him in the near future.

The Rubio Agenda

Marco Rubio is a Republican Senator from Florida running for President in 2016. Rubio has extensive experience in political planning and strategizing, as seen in his career as a Senator, and previously in Florida’s House of Representatives. Rubio has demonstrated determination and hard-work in his political career, makes successful plans with realistic goals, focuses on what the people need and what is best for the country. He has demonstrated capabilities that show his potential to fulfill the roles of the President.

Rubio was born in Florida in 1971, born of Cuban immigrants. He was one of four children, and his parents worked hard to provide for the family. His father spent many years as a bartender and his mother worked many retail and marketing jobs. His interest in law and politics came from his uncle, who used to read him newspaper articles to him and his siblings. Rubio was an avid football player, and received an athletic scholarship to Tarkio College in Missouri. However, within a year, he returned to Florida to finish his schooling. After completing his undergraduate at the University of Florida in 1993, he completed his graduate Law degree in 1996.

His career in politics began when he was elected to the West Miami City Commission in 1998. The next year, Rubio became involved in state politics on the House of Representatives. By 2003, he was considered the majority leader, pushing for legislative changes, and later being named Speaker of the House. As the speaker, he urged for policy changes and reform within state government. He held many gatherings with local Florida residents to hear their ideas and come up with plans. From these ideas, Rubio put together several legislatures which he called “100 Innovative Ideas for Florida’s Future,” half of which became laws.

Controversy arose when media discovered that Rubio had lied about his family past. He claimed that his parents had fled Cuba during the revolution, when in reality they left the country before Castro was in power. However, this had very little impact on his campaign, being that his policies urged to drastically decrease federal spending. Throughout his political career, he has had successful ideas made into laws, and has made a positive and influential name for himself. In 2012, he was a consideration for a running mate of Mitt Romney. However, he was not interested in a vice-presidential nomination. The Republican party saw him as a good candidate because of his ties with and likely support from the Latino community.

In April of 2015, Rubio announced his plans to run for President in 2016. He gave a speech in his hometown of Miami, explaining how he came to this decision and his plans for running. Rubio stated, “We’ve reached a moment now, not just in my career, but the history of our country, where I believe that it needs a Republican Party that is new and vibrant, that understands the future, has an agenda for the future. And I feel uniquely qualified to offer that.” This statement shows his optimistic outlook on the changing future, and his determination to be what this country needs.

Hillary’s Haiatus?

The 2012 Benghazi attack occurred on September 11, 2012.  Islamic militants attacked the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, killing our U.S. Ambassador, J. Christopher Stevens and our Foreign Service Information Management Officer, Sean Smith.  A second attack several hours later at a nearby compound killed two CIA contractors, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty.  Ten others were injured.  The United States immediately increased security all over the world at diplomatic and military facilities and began an investigation into the Benghazi attack.  State Department officials, especially Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State, were criticized for denying requests for more security.  Top officials first claimed the Benghazi attack was the result of an anti-Muslim video, Innocence of Muslims, but later investigations discovered there was no such protest and the attacks were premeditated. It is believed that Clinton did not listen to security warnings before the attack, which caused military support to arrive too late.  The personal journal of Christopher Stevens was recovered which told of his great concern about security in Libya months before the attack.

Republicans formed the House Select Committee on Benghazi in May of 2014 to investigate this attack.  It was revealed that Clinton’s State Department email account had no correspondence.  This prompted the State Department to ask Clinton to turn over her emails from her private server.  This began the now famous and in the news constantly, email scandal.  On the night of the attack Clinton wrote an email to her daughter under a pseudonym “Diane Reynolds”–that the attack was launched by “an Al Qaeda-like group,” not the result of a video.

Disputed issues over the attack fall into three categories: before, during and after.  The United States did not consider the security issue in Benghazi to be a serious matter.  There had been recent smaller attacks and armed militias and Al Qaeda activists were in the city.  U.S. security at our Embassy had even been scaled down.  The video mentioned earlier had insulted Muhammed and on the evening of the attack, around 3000 people had gathered outside the U.S. embassy in Cairo.  During the attack not enough was done to defend the embassy.  We had military sources in Italy, F-16s, but they were not deployed.  Security contractors in the CIA Annex down the road asked if they could help but were ordered to “stand down.”  They were later attacked and two lost their lives.  After the attack Obama and Clinton blamed the video rather than a terrorist plot.  Internal emails blaming Al Qaeda were removed.

There have been six official investigations into the attacks and there is still no conclusion.  Before becoming Secretary of State in 2009, Hillary Clinton set up an email server at her Chappaqua, New York home and used it for all her electronic correspondence, both for work and personal during her four-year term.  She did not use a government managed email account.  She was accused of possibly violating federal requirements.  Clinton claims this was out of convenience.  Others think she had her own email system so she could have total control.  This has triggered the investigation as to what should and shouldn’t be provided to the government, as well as the Benghazi cover-up.

Hillary Clinton faced eleven hours of testimony in October 2015 before the Select Committee.  Michael Bay has come out with a current movie 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.  This movie could have a direct impact on the Clinton campaign for President.

This email trail has become a big issue in Hillary Clinton’s campaign.  She has fallen in the polls and has enlisted help from her husband Bill for campaign support.  Her high security emails were more susceptible to hackers because of her actions.  Clinton has maintained that no classified material was sent over her email account, but in July, the inspector general of the US intelligence community, Charles McCullough, told Congress that Clinton had sent at least four messages containing classified information.  Clinton finally agreed to hand over the private server in August to the FBI.  She deleted many emails she deemed personal.  The State Department said that more than a dozen Libyan-related messages a former aide Sidney Blumenthal had sent her were unaccounted for.  It is impossible to know whether they were deleted on purpose.

This week brings new and more serious allegations about whether Clinton mishandled classified information while serving as Secretary of State.  The State Department has said that 22 of her emails were “top secret” and this is the first time they have been classified at that level.  This classification means they can cause “exceptionally grave” damage to national security if disclosed.  The documents were not marked as classified when they were sent.  They will not be released to the public.  The Bureaus of Diplomatic Security, and Intelligence and Research are now conducting an investigation on when they were formerly classified.  Clinton has again denied the “top secret” classification and demanded all emails be released to the public.  Of the 1,582 emails Clinton sent or received, most were at the lowest level of “confidential.”  Eleven included “secret” information.  These 22 emails were not part of that number.  None of her emails were marked as classified during her office as Secretary of State, but intelligence officials say some material was clearly classified.  Again, her aides also sent and received classified information.  Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee says that Clinton cannot be trusted with the presidency and Tom Cotton, Republican Senator from Arkansas, says Clinton should face the same consequences any federal employee would face, including criminal prosecution.

This brings to mind General Petraeus.  Petraeus was one of the most distinguished officers in our military.  He devised and successfully executed the Iraq surge, was the former Director of the CIA, and was thought to be a possible candidate for the Republican Presidential race.  Petraeus made the big mistake of giving his mistress secret information, including names of covert officers and war strategy.  He reached a plea agreement with the Justice Department and received two years of probation, a $40,000 fine, and ultimately ruined his reputation.  The documents showed Petraeus had eight books of notes taken during meetings and conferences and had them delivered to his biographer and mistress, Paula Broadwell.  Petraeus and now Clinton were and are accused of misusing classified emails.  Petraeus admitted his guilt, and Clinton won’t admit to her actions as wrong or tell the truth.

When classified information is leaked to our enemies, bad things can happen to our intelligence forces.  They can be captured or even killed.  It puts our nation in jeopardy.

It remains to be seen as to whether Hillary Clinton will be indicted.  This investigation has been going on for years, and it does seem to cast doubt as to her truthfulness.  And it has had an impact in the polls.

Feeling the Bern?

imagesWhen people spoke of the democratic nominee for the 2016 election most people instantly thought about Hillary Clinton until just recently. But now in dramatic fashion Bernie Sanders is coming in with a lot of momentum. The socialist Vermont senator spent less than a third of what Hillary Clinton spent in Iowa yet they still tied. The big question is how is Bernie Sanders reeling in so many votes over democratic power Hillary Clinton and who is going to win it?

Many Democrats are probably beginning to wonder if Hillary Clinton is electable or not due to her email scandal about Benghazi and other scandalous allegations and there is only one other Democrat that has any chance to win being Bernie Sanders. What Bernie Sanders has done is he has completely captured the youth democratic vote. From ages 18-44 Bernie Sanders is reeling in an unbelievable 76% of the votes compared to Hillary Clinton taking in 23%. He has completely taken young America by storm and is running away with their vote. Why do young people like Bernie so much? In recent decades American education has been shifted further left than before and with many people growing up in the Obama era, they are in absolute awe of another far left president. Most young Americans have not been able to see the collapse of a group of socialist economies, how much we spend on welfare and how many other problems Bernie endorses. They are drowned in how big and bad conservative America is through the depth of the liberal media.

Due to Bernie’s age this will probably be his last campaign but are self proclaimed socialists the potential future of the country? According to many studies in young voters, they quite possibly could be. The GOP’s time might be ticking if they do not win this election. The country has shifted further left in the last eight years than in the previous 200. If Bernie Sanders is elected the GOP might completely collapse and people might slowly begin to forget what it ever was. But more importantly than the GOP collapsing, this nation’s economy will crash like never before.

He is going to change everything this economy was built on: a competitive, free market capitalist economy where everyone has an opportunity to go from rags to riches if they play their cards right. It has worked for 200 years to build the World’s largest economy ever. Giving people free money as a form of an economy has not ever worked in this World and will never work. We have more people out of work than ever before in this country and that number will not shrink if Senator Sanders is elected. Haiti is the largest recipient of American money in the Americas and also happens to have the smallest economy out of all countries in the Americas. North Korea and South Korea started as two identical countries when they were divided. North Korea became a socialist economy while South Korea took the capitalist approach and now the average South Korean makes sixteen times what the average North Korean makes a year. There is nothing else to say about socialism, two countries populated by the same ethnicity choose two different types of economies. The evidence is unbarable.

Young people across America need to wake up. A socialist running the United States of America is something that should never happen. This country was built on free market capitalism and that should never change. It is what made America great and is what skyrocketed our economy to the largest ever. Bernie Sanders is not the candidate for America.

Gun Control

Cartoon-Gun-Control-for-Dummies-600Everyone has the right to own a gun for their own protection and there should be no gun control laws. Many people think that gun control is right because they think keeping people away from guns will reduce the amount of deaths each year. They think that guns are the leading cause of the many deaths that had been committed each year. Whenever people hear the word gun the thoughts are of violence and negativity. Many people, myself included think gun control is wrong because we know that it is not necessary, since we know that guns were not involved in many of the deaths caused each year. The right to have a gun is the same thing as having the right to protect yourself, and taking that right away is not beneficial because it just causes people to not be able to protect themselves in a crisis in which a gun might be necessary to live.   While many other people disagree and think it is good because of the safety for people, I think that gun control.

There should not be gun control because there are law-abiding citizens that would not commit murder, robbery, or domestic violence. Only guns in hands of people that have been arrested and have a record of violence actives cause murder, robbery and domestic violence the most. The President, who is pro gun control, even admits that it would not have decreased the amount of deaths. He was asked,”How would this have stopped the last few mass murders?” and answered the question by saying that it wouldn’t have.” So what is the point of having gun control. There should be criminal control and not gun controls because it would be more useful.

President Obama makes a good point when he said, “there were 30,000 Americans who were killed by gun violence. What if we could just lower it to 28,000? What if we could spare 2,000 families from the heartbreak of that kind of loss?” But there are other things to consider, like how many lives a year are saved when protecting themselves with their gun. In my opinion having a gun for your own safety is more beneficial than taking them away from innocent people protecting themselves from being harmed. There should be criminal control and not gun controls because it would be more useful. There should not be gun control because even though there is gun control criminals could still have ways of getting guns. In my opinion owning a gun for self-defence purposes should not be illegal.

Should We Make Voter Registration Easier?

Should We Make Voter Registration Easier?

To be honest, voter registration has never really been on my mind until recently. I did not know what the process was or how it happened. I used to think that if I had to vote, it would be a huge process where I was going to be asked a lot of questions about America. But a few years ago when I asked my mom how you were to register to vote, it astonished me how easy it was. And now being eighteen, going through the process myself. It is scary to think that, people that do now know that much about politics are able to vote. From a person who has not really been involved in politics to all of a sudden being thrown into the world of politics, it is scary to think about how much one vote can do. Not to mention those of us who have just turned eighteen can easily be manipulated into voting for someone without putimgresting that much though into it. It is crazy to think that people want to make it easier to vote. If you do not know how to register right now and think it should be easier… maybe you shouldn’t be voting in the first place.

Bernie Sanders uses the young minds of new voters to his advantage. As of now, most of his supporters are college-age and are following him to Iowa to support him. According to the week.com, “ In 2008, it did indeed succeed in bringing out unprimages.jpgecedented numbers of young voters, and those under 30 made up 22 percent of the Democratic caucus-goers. But four years before, when John Kerry won, young voters were 17 percent of the caucus-goers — a little less, but not an enormous difference. The reason the increase was only a few points was that everyone turned out in larger numbers in 2008, young and old alike.”  So even though many of Bernie’s young voters are coming out to support him in Iowa, he will need more than the youth to help.

In conclusion, if voting were made more accessible to young voters, it would not make that much of a different because it take more than the youth of America to vote for the next president. The next president will be chosen by a the greater mass of America’s youth and elders. I believe that making voter registration will not make that much of a difference because registration is already easy as it is.

Does Trump Have Key Presidential Qualities?

In almost every poll leading up to the Iowa Caucuses, the polarizing candidate Donald Trump has had the lead on the Republican side. Many people are dumbfounded by this fact due to the arrogant, and sometimes ignorant nature of Trump. The question that I urge every one to answer when voting is does the candidate have true presidential qualities that are necessary for the progression of America? Due to this question, I do not believe Donald Trump is suited to be the president of the United States.

Neustadt

Richard Neustadt

In Famous author Richard Neustadt work, “Presidential Power”, he addresses what the presidents’ authority consists of. He listed three things: public prestige, professional reputation, and lastly the power of the commander to persuade. Public prestige can be described as the way the people view the president. Although the general public is not directly involved in policymaking, they can greatly influence legislators. The president’s professional reputation is essentially the way he is looked at by leaders in Washington and elsewhere such as politicians, foreign leaders, and also congress of course. For policy to be implemented by the commander-in-chief, he must be trustworthy and respected by fellow leaders in Washington and in foreign places. Lastly and most importantly, Neustadt addresses the importance of the president to persuade. The president is just one man or woman and cannot simply receive everything he asks for. He must balance different interests and must really convince others that what he proposes is in their best interest rather than just his. These roles of the president show exactly what qualities are necessary for a president.

Donald Trump

Donald Trump

Trump has garnered much of his support due to his persuasive confidence. Rex Huppke of the Chicago Tribune said, “Like him or not, Trump has made a lot of money and garnered a lot of fame by perpetually believing he’s the smartest guy in the room.” Trump’s confidence is why he is so loved by many. His power to persuade people is one of his biggest strengths, which Neustadt would compliment. The general public often views Trump as a clown (deservedly so at times), but he also has an immense amount of support in our nation. Despite being quite arrogant and not experienced in politics, Trump has a pretty good standing with the pubic. His public prestige is solid and has made him a serious threat in this presidential race. What hurts Donald Trump’s legitimacy as a presidential candidate is his professional reputation. Despite being a real estate mogul, Trump has never had any experience in politics or even with leaders in D.C. For one to be a good president they must have respect by other lawmakers such as congress. With the numerous ignorant and outlandish statements made by Trump; I do not believe that he would be able to implement his policies very effectively. He would struggle finding common ground with other leaders both foreign and domestic.

For a president to be effective according to Richard Neustadt, the three qualities must all be met and must all work together. With that being said, I do not believe that Donald Trump has the necessary qualities to be a great leader of America.
