How to protect people’s rights

3845786-b438716 In the study of unit 2, it mainly talks about the constitution and  the Federalist#10, I have learned the political system in America, how does the government protects people, and as an American citizens, what rights do they have.

From the Declaration of Independence, it says: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.This declaration indicates the significance of Government, it shows that Government’s appearance is to protect people and guarantee their rights away from harm. Although government is to secure people’s rights, from the study, it also said to protect people’s lives, them need to give up “perfect freedom”. Before the appearance of government, people can do whatever they want, but after they created government, they do not have absolute power, by contract, their rights are limited now. This is a good thing, because people’s behaviors are limited, that guarantee the peace of society.

The original constitution consists of preface and seven texts. It specifies the legislative power belongs to the United States congress, and the composition of congress; the executive power belongs to the President of the United States, and how to select the president; the judicial power belongs to the U.S. Supreme Court, and the composition of the Supreme Court; the relationship of the states and obligation; the program about the constitutional amendment’s proposed and through; the federal constitution and the highest law; this constitution shall come into effect upon approval by nine state’s. These are the essential content of the U.S. Constitution. And the first three words of the preface is very important, it says: “we the people”, they indicate the purpose of the constitution. The contribution of the U.S. Constitution guarantees the citizens’ rights.

   The thirty-three amendments to the United States Constitution specify the rights of the people and the limitation on the federal government power. During the class, we did a discussion about the Constitution and the amendment, we understand them clearly by discussing different events. We learn that which behaviors are illegal and which behaviors are legal. For example, in the 4th amendment, it says: “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, house, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, ”According to this, if someone raid in people’s house without probable cause, then people can say their behaviors are illegal and report them to the court. There is one event that makes deep impression on me, it talks about a museum shows an exhibit that includes an American flag being flushed down a toilet and stepped on like a doormat. Then they ask whether should the museum remove the exhibit or not. According to the 1st Amendment, it says: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” but we can not say the freedom is perfect. Although we have speech freedom, that does not mean people can do whatever they want. The museum has freedom to show exhibit, but if this exhibit will cause the chaos, then they will not have this freedom of speech.

   In conclusion, government gives people lots of rights, and protect these rights, but that does not mean we have the absolute freedom. We should become qualified citizens, obey the laws. And according to some events, we know that there are still some disadvantages in American System, the responsibility of the citizen is to find those disadvantages and improve the system, that can make the society more stable and maintain the peace.
